State Electric Company (Stelco) has clarified that the perceived increase in electricity bills for May 2025 is due to discounts applied in April, not a rise in the tariff.

The clarification follows public complaints over high May bills, despite the implementation of a new, reduced electricity tariff. According to Stelco, while the May bill was calculated using the reduced rate, some customers experienced higher charges compared to April because the April bills included special discounts, particularly related to the Ramadan period.

Stelco explained that the real impact of the reduced tariff will be more apparent when compared to bills issued prior to the last three billing cycles. These include two bills with Ramadan-related discounts and one for a shortened billing period. The company suggested that comparing the May bill with those from December 2024 or January 2025 would give customers a clearer view of the actual difference brought by the new rates.

The change in tariffs comes under the directive of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who ordered the reduction last month as part of efforts to ease financial pressure on the public.

Stelco has encouraged customers to contact its Contact Center Hotline for further clarification or to lodge complaints regarding their bills.
