A team from China is expected to visit the Maldives in July to conduct a feasibility study on constructing new council buildings with Chinese assistance.
Speaking to state media, Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, said the project aims to provide modern infrastructure to local councils across the country, a key pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The initiative involves building new council offices in 50 islands to replace old and overcrowded facilities. The project will be funded by the Chinese government under an agreement signed between both nations late last month.
Minister Shareef emphasized the government's commitment to strengthening local governance by ensuring councils have the necessary resources and space to operate effectively.
