Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar has stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is committed to putting council proposals into practice.
In a post on X, the Minister said the President’s visits to islands demonstrate his intent to turn council recommendations into action. He added that council budgets should be determined based on island size, highlighting that financial empowerment is crucial for councils to deliver better services and sustain income generation.
President Muizzu recently announced that the current fiscal formula, which allocates smaller block grants to councils in less populated areas, will be revised to factor in island size. He confirmed that the revised formula will be included in the 2026 budget.
The President has also pledged to double the budget allocated to women’s development committees starting next year.
