Former Deputy Speaker of Parliament and ex-MDP Chair Moosa Manik has criticized current MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, urging him to focus on resolving internal divisions within the party before making broader political statements.

Speaking to local media on Monday, Moosa, commonly known as Rico, said the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) must first be put “on the right track” before discussing the country’s direction. He expressed concern over increasing internal disarray, adding that the party is currently facing deeper issues than before.

He also questioned Fayyaz’s alignment with the Democrats, a splinter group from the MDP, noting that it was the same faction that worked against the party during the last presidential election. Moosa suggested that Fayyaz’s actions cast doubt on whether he genuinely supported the candidacy of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Despite political disagreements, Moosa said he maintains a working relationship with former President Mohamed Nasheed. He accused Fayyaz of focusing more on paving the way for his own presidential ambitions rather than managing the party’s affairs effectively, and suggested that if this continues, the party’s reins should be handed over to its general membership.

His remarks came following a meeting with Nasheed, during which Fayyaz had called for unity among reform-minded individuals to steer the country back on track.
