The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said it will welcome anyone who upholds the party’s principles and does not act in ways that harm the party.
The remarks come after The Democrats, formed by members who left the MDP due to internal disputes between President Mohamed Nasheed and then-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, decided to rejoin the MDP. The decision was passed at The Democrats' National Assembly meeting yesterday.
Following the announcement, the MDP parliamentary group held a press conference today. Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir stated that every Maldivian has the right to join the MDP, provided they respect the party’s rules and do not engage in actions that damage it.
His comments come amid reports that President Nasheed himself, who once vowed to dissolve the MDP, has also decided to leave The Democrats and return to the party.
Mauroof added that The Democrats' return has not yet been formally discussed within the MDP’s parliamentary group.
In response to recent developments, the MDP has scheduled a National Assembly session tonight.
