At an informal National Assembly meeting held tonight, MDP leader Abdulla Shahid called on the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to move beyond past conflicts and welcome members who had previously left the party.

Shahid highlighted that the MDP remains the only party with a viable future in the Maldives and expressed his support for The Democrats if they choose to rejoin the party. He stressed that the MDP should not be bound by the past but focus on the future.

Former MDP Chairperson Maria Ahmed Didi also emphasized the need for the party to grow in order to win the upcoming presidential election, while cautioning against repeating past mistakes.

After a period away from politics, President Mohamed Nasheed returned to the Maldives yesterday and convened a National Assembly of The Democrats, where a resolution was passed by Nasheed and former Parliament Vice-President Eva Abdullah to rejoin the MDP.
