The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced that it will move forward in unity with former President Mohamed Nasheed, welcoming his return to the party after a two-year split.
Nasheed, a founding member of the MDP, left the party following internal disagreements, particularly over President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s bid for a second term. During the rift, Nasheed was highly critical of Solih, including remarks on personal matters.
Now, with The Democrats leadership deciding to rejoin the MDP, the party convened its National Assembly yesterday to deliberate on the reintegration of Nasheed and others. Following the meeting, the MDP released a statement officially welcoming Nasheed and reaffirming its openness to anyone committed to serving the country.
The statement emphasized that MDP is a platform for those who believe in democratic values and are willing to stand up for the nation. It also warned that the current administration’s actions signal a need for urgent reform, adding that MDP will remain steadfast in holding the government accountable and defending constitutional rights.
