Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has welcomed the decision by members of The Democrats to rejoin the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), urging them to remain committed to the true faith of Islam and the principles of democracy.

Following the MDP’s National Assembly resolution to welcome back The Democrats, President Solih expressed his support on social media, stating that the return of former President Mohamed Nasheed and his supporters marks a renewed opportunity for unity within the party.

He advised all returning members to stay rooted in religious values while working together to uphold democratic principles and prioritize the interests of the people.

Meanwhile, tensions within the MDP have risen following Nasheed’s return, particularly over the upcoming presidential primary. Party Chairman Fayyaz Ismail and President of the party Abdulla Shahid have declared their candidacies, while President Solih is reportedly consulting senior party figures about consolidating party leadership under his direction.

The Democrats, in their resolution to rejoin MDP, said the move is driven by the need to build a strong opposition, restore public trust in the political system, and ensure accountability ahead of local council elections.
