Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel has concluded a successful visit to Istanbul, Türkiye, where he participated in the 51st Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
In his national statement, delivered under the theme “OIC in a transforming world”, Dr. Khaleel emphasized the urgent need to strengthen the OIC’s effectiveness and foster greater cooperation among member states to confront the challenges facing the Muslim Ummah.
Expressing deep concern over escalating violence in Gaza, Dr. Khaleel reiterated Maldives’ unwavering support for an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. He called on the international community and OIC member states to urgently recognize Palestine, calling it essential for lasting peace.
Dr. Khaleel also condemned Israeli attacks on Iran and criticised the lack of accountability and violations of international law by Israel.
The Maldives delegation took part in a special session focused on Israel’s aggression against Iran, held on the sidelines of the main meeting. Dr. Khaleel also met with his counterpart from Tajikistan to discuss enhancing bilateral ties and OIC collaboration.
Dr. Khaleel was accompanied by Permanent Representative to the OIC Ahmed Sareer, Ambassador to Türkiye Lt. Gen. (Retd) Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef, Director Fathimath Razana, and Counsellor Aishath Raihana.
