Former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairman (Reeko) Moosa Manik has said that even if the MDP secures a parliamentary majority, it will not misuse that power like the ruling PNC is currently doing.

Speaking during a program aired on a local media outlet, Moosa, who also served as Vice Speaker of Parliament, said the MDP had previously held a majority in Parliament but did not act unconstitutionally. He stressed that MDP leaders, including former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, would never support the misuse of parliamentary powers.

He also stated that while the MDP once experienced internal divisions, the party still respected the Constitution and did not use its majority to undermine state institutions.

Moosa accused the current government of attempting to bring the judiciary and legislature under the control of the executive, calling such moves unconstitutional and dangerous for democracy. He also criticized the administration’s economic policies, citing dollar shortages, rising black market rates, and inflation as major concerns.

According to Moosa, the government’s financial strategy, including a budget reportedly between MVR 50–57 billion, is failing ordinary citizens. He further accused the PNC of planning to secure future election wins by holding a supermajority in Parliament and buying votes with state funds.

The ruling PNC currently holds a supermajority in Parliament. The opposition MDP has continued to raise concerns over what it calls the abuse of the majority to make changes that undermine constitutional checks and balances.
