Baarashu MP Ibrahim Shujau has criticised the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for choosing Kulhudhuffushi City as the venue for its 20th anniversary rally, claiming it reflects a lack of support in the capital, Malé.
In a post on X, Shujau said the MDP is holding the rally in Kulhudhuffushi because there are no people in Malé willing to attend. He mocked the party’s slogan, “Strong Together,” questioning how people who are supposedly united cannot face each other.
Shujau also claimed that the MDP has brought in 250 supporters from Malé to Kulhudhuffushi for the rally and alleged that the recent reunification with the Democrats, the party formed by former President Mohamed Nasheed, was staged to mask internal divisions.
The main sea vessel transporting supporters, Badhshah, was delayed due to bad weather, prompting the MDP to postpone the rally originally scheduled for Thursday night. The event is now planned for Saturday evening, weather permitting. Party leaders have already begun arriving in Kulhudhuffushi ahead of the celebrations.
