Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) will be “very beautiful” if the Maldives can find a way out of its mounting debt burden.
In a post on X today, Nasheed criticized the government's focus on physical infrastructure, saying it is narrow-minded to equate development with “concrete, glass, and plastic.” His comments come amid opposition criticism over the government’s handling of the terminal project and the broader economic implications.
Nasheed added that while the new terminal has the potential to boost tourist arrivals and increase state revenue, its true value lies in whether it helps the country escape the debt trap.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who is set to inaugurate the terminal on July 26, said yesterday that credit for the project will be shared among all past presidents who contributed to its development.
