The Parliament has opened public consultation on the Trademark Bill and the Intellectual Property Office Bill, inviting citizens to submit their comments before July 22.
The Trademark Bill proposes penalties of up to MVR 2 million for selling counterfeit goods, while the Intellectual Property Office Bill aims to establish a formal office to promote innovation and strengthen the protection of intellectual property in the country.
Both bills, submitted by the government, were unanimously passed by Parliament and forwarded to the Economic Committee for further review. The committee met yesterday and agreed to complete its work on the bills by August.
Comments must be submitted in writing to the Economic Committee or the Parliamentary Office before 11:00 a.m. on July 22.
