President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that work on a long-awaited sewerage project for Manadhoo Island will commence this August. This will end a persistent issue that has affected residents for years.
Speaking to the community during his tour of South Miladhunmadulu Atoll, President Muizzu confirmed that the sewerage project will be undertaken alongside a major road development initiative, with both expected to be completed by 2027. He noted that resolving the matter required a complete overhaul of the existing system.
In addition to infrastructure upgrades, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services on the island. He stated that efforts are underway to develop the hospital and recruit specialist doctors, emphasizing that healthcare improvements resonate deeply with individuals and families.
Addressing sports development, President Muizzu confirmed that delays affecting the multi-sports complex have been resolved and the project will now proceed as planned. He also revealed a new initiative to build a dedicated volleyball court.
Recognizing Manadhoo’s growing role in education, the President announced administrative efforts to establish a campus of the Islamic University of the Maldives on the island.
Transport connectivity is also set to improve, with direct RTL ferry services between Manadhoo and Ungoofaaru scheduled to begin this November.
On the pressing issue of housing, President Muizzu acknowledged that a complete solution will take time. However, he assured residents that a long-term plan involving new housing units and a loan scheme is already underway to meet the island’s needs.
During the community meeting, passport services were officially launched in Manadhoo, with the Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, officiating the inauguration.
