President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that coastal protection works and the western jetty project in Maalhendhoo are set to begin this August, addressing a long-standing concern for the island’s residents.
Speaking during his visit to the island as part of his tour of the inhabited islands of South Miladhunmadulu Atoll, President Muizzu confirmed that the jetty design has been finalized and that only the final stages of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) remain. He assured the community that the project will be implemented in full.
The President also addressed Maalhendhoo’s critical land shortage, describing it as a long-standing aspiration of the people and a personal pledge of his administration. He stated that the proposed land reclamation project, essential for housing and economic development, would be carefully planned to preserve the island’s natural beauty. The project is expected to be included in the 2026 State Budget following necessary consultations.
President Muizzu further noted that the decision to bring Tholhendhu under Maalhendhoo’s administrative boundary remains in place, though its implementation is delayed due to ongoing court proceedings. He said the Attorney General has been instructed to explore the appropriate legal path forward.
In addition to major infrastructure projects, the President reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to improving laboratory services and road development on the island, emphasizing that Maalhendhoo’s broader development needs will remain a top priority.
Earlier in the day, President Muizzu attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the island’s new Fitness and Recreation Centre, marking another milestone in the island’s development journey.
