Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa launched a strong criticism of the government on Wednesday while speaking in Parliament, accusing it of failing to tackle the rising cost of living and persistent power issues.

MP Ghafoor said the government had failed to reduce even the price of a single chicken egg, calling it a clear indication of weak governance. He further criticised the administration for spending MVR 250 million on entertainment and short events, arguing it reflects a lack of sincerity in addressing real public concerns.

He accused the government of inflating electricity bills, saying households that previously paid MVR 2,000 are now paying around MVR 4,000. Ghafoor also pointed to ongoing power outages in Addu City, claiming the government's only response has been to say it is investigating the issues without offering concrete solutions.

Commenting on the situation in Addu, he said the dispatch of a new engine has not resolved the electricity problem, and the broader power situation in the country remains unaddressed. He described the government as a disaster for the people, failing to deliver basic services.

Ghafoor also mocked the government's explanation that persistent heat is due to weather conditions, saying that even a month of rain has not brought any relief from the heat under the current administration.
