President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and visiting Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka delivered joint press statements on Monday at the President’s Office, following official talks held as part of President Disanayaka’s state visit to the Maldives.

President Muizzu described the Maldives and Sri Lanka as “kindred nations” united by the Indian Ocean and centuries of friendship, highlighting the significance of this year’s 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations, established on 26 July 1965. He praised Sri Lanka’s efforts to overcome recent economic challenges and expressed confidence in its continued recovery under President Disanayaka’s leadership.

The Maldivian President outlined key areas of cooperation discussed during the talks, including trade, defence, education, fisheries, agriculture, youth development, and environmental sustainability. He noted that the agreements signed earlier in the day—a treaty on legal assistance and a MoU on diplomatic training—reflected the shared commitment to deepen bilateral ties.

President Muizzu also recognized Sri Lanka’s longstanding contributions to the Maldives' education sector and welcomed further collaboration between academic institutions.

In his remarks, President Disanayaka echoed these sentiments, underlining the importance of strengthening ties through cultural, economic, and environmental cooperation. He commended the Maldives’ leadership on climate issues and introduced Sri Lanka’s “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative.

The Sri Lankan President also extended a formal invitation to President Muizzu to visit Sri Lanka, as both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing consular services, addressing illegal fishing, and improving maritime security through continued cooperation.
