Chairman of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Fayyaz Ismail, has stated that key institutions established to ensure government accountability have failed, raising serious concerns about the state of governance in the Maldives.

Speaking on the podcast Reboot, Fayyaz said the judiciary and independent oversight bodies are no longer functioning as intended, making it increasingly difficult to resolve deeply entrenched issues within the state structure.

He highlighted that while there are many sources of information pointing to these failures, the primary issue is the inadequacy of the current legal framework to address them. He called for urgent reforms and immediate action to rectify the situation.

Fayyaz also alleged that the judiciary, including the Supreme Court, is under the control of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, despite constitutional provisions guaranteeing its independence. He said that in practice, the separation of powers does not exist as outlined in law.

He stressed the need to create conditions for independent institutions to function with true autonomy, free from political interference.

Fayyaz also criticized the policies of the current administration, claiming that the government has failed to meet the expectations of public engagement and transparency.
