The government has submitted a proposed amendment to the Drugs Act to Parliament, seeking to introduce heavier penalties for drug importation and trafficking — including the possible inclusion of the death penalty.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced the development in a post on X, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to protecting society from the harms of drugs and building a drug-free generation.
According to the President, while the amendment bill has been introduced, the death penalty and other severe punishments are still under consideration. The proposal draws on practices from other countries that enforce similar strict penalties for major drug offenses.
He added that the bill has been shared with relevant government agencies for further study and to suggest additional amendments before finalizing its content.
The proposed legislative changes are part of the government’s wider efforts to strengthen anti-drug laws and improve public health and safety. In parallel, the administration is also working on major amendments to reduce the import and use of tobacco products.
