The newly opened Terminal 1 at Velana International Airport (VIA) has served more than 2,000 passengers since it began operations earlier this week, according to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).

The terminal was officially opened on July 26, with operations commencing the following day. The first flight to use the terminal was a Maldivian airline service arriving from Cochin International Airport, India, on July 27.

Since then, Terminal 1 has handled 14 Maldivian flights and served a total of 2,410 passengers — including 956 departures and 1,454 arrivals.

MACL noted that international flight operations will gradually transition to Terminal 1 through a structured process known as ORAT (Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer). This transition is being managed in collaboration with international airport consultancy firm Modalis.

Airlines are being moved one by one to the new terminal, with all services expected to be fully relocated before the start of the upcoming tourist season.
