Former President Abdulla Yameen has expressed doubt over true state-level independence in the Maldives, stating that many people no longer believe the country is fully free.
Speaking to local media on the occasion of the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day, Yameen said that while independence was achieved through great struggle, preserving it remains a serious challenge.
He noted that freedom is felt both at the individual and state levels, with state freedom encompassing political independence and sovereign decision-making.
Yameen also questioned the current government's handling of national matters, including the unexplored potential of the country’s maritime territory and concerns over the presence of Indian military personnel. He implied that such issues compromise the nation’s autonomy.
