The government has spent MVR 1 billion on the Aasandha health insurance scheme so far this year, the Ministry of Finance has revealed.

As of July 17, spending on Aasandha had increased by 9.9 percent compared to the same period last year. This year’s state budget allocates MVR 1.8 billion for the scheme, while total spending in 2024 amounted to MVR 2.1 billion.

Historically, Aasandha spending hovered around MVR 1 billion annually. However, costs surged following the COVID-19 pandemic and have continued to rise each year. Despite ongoing efforts, no administration has yet implemented a long-term fix to control Aasandha ballooning expenses.

The government says reforms are underway, including price controls on 250 of the most commonly used medications, as part of broader changes to make the scheme more sustainable.
