Inguraidhoo MP and PNC Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Falah stated in Parliament today that the government’s proposed amendments to the Decentralization Act are not intended to diminish the powers of local councils, but rather to strengthen them and improve their ability to serve the public effectively.

The proposed changes, which aim to bring financial oversight and structural reforms to council operations, have drawn criticism from some opposition members. However, Falah argued that the reforms are necessary to align with the broader goals of the current government system and ensure that councils act in the best interest of the people.

Falah emphasized that the bill is not connected to upcoming local council elections and that the government is not using legislation for political advantage. He noted that only a small number of councils are operating irresponsibly, while the majority are fulfilling their duties with dedication. He clarified that the amendments are being introduced to prevent misuse of land and the allocation of contractual jobs, particularly as council terms near their end.

He reminded Parliament that the initial version of the bill was introduced by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), and expressed confidence that the MDP would now support the amendment, as its purpose has become clear.

Falah reaffirmed President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to empowering councils across the country, including those in constituencies held by opposition MPs. He said the government is focused on national development and will not implement any laws that harm the people.

He concluded by calling on all members of Parliament to support the amendment, urging them to view it from the perspective of governance and public interest rather than through a political lens.
