MDP Parliamentary Group Member and Hanimaadhoo Constituency MP Abdul Ghafoor Musa has expressed frustration over the lack of cooperation from enforcement agencies, saying it hampers the effectiveness of parliamentary efforts.

Speaking during the debate on amendments to the Administrative Taxation Act in Parliament today, Ghafoor acknowledged that the proposed bill could bring positive changes. However, he stressed that the work of MPs is undermined by the reluctance of executive agencies to cooperate.

He accused some state institutions of facilitating theft rather than preventing it and emphasized the urgent need to reduce corruption in the country. Ghafoor also criticized the courts for enabling loopholes that prevent corruption cases from being successfully prosecuted.

Ghafoor further stated that governments must have the authority to hold enforcement agency employees accountable if they neglect their duties in combating corruption.

His remarks come amid government proposals to increase penalties for tax-related offenses and expand the powers of the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).
