Former Ungoofaaru MP Mohamed Waheed has said the upcoming local council elections will serve as a public verdict on the actions of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration.
Speaking at an MDP rally, Waheed argued that the upcoming elections are not merely about choosing council members but about signaling approval or disapproval of what he described as “crimes committed by the President.”
He criticized the government’s recent amendments to the Decentralization Act, claiming they undermine council powers because the President anticipates losing the local elections. Waheed added that decentralization is a core principle “created by God” for the Maldives and extends beyond the role of individual councillors.
Calling on MDP supporters to unite and secure victory in the polls, Waheed said the party must use the elections to send a strong message of opposition to the government’s actions. His remarks came as President Muizzu toured Baa Atoll, where he has promoted the Decentralization Act amendments as a means to empower local councils.
