Former STO Managing Director Hussain Amr has strongly criticized the proposed Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill, describing it as an attempt to silence journalists.
His remarks came as journalists staged a silent protest in parliament during the debate on the bill introduced by Thulhaadhoo MP Abdul Hannan Aboobakuru. Protesters covered their mouths to symbolize censorship, while the Maldives Media Council also called for the bill to be rejected.
Amr said attempts to suppress the media would only strengthen journalists’ voices, adding that there is no room for authoritarian or oppressive practices in the country.
The bill seeks to establish a Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission, replacing the Maldives Broadcasting Commission and the Maldives Media Council. It also proposes fines of up to MVR 100,000, temporary suspension of outlets under investigation, and powers to block websites or halt broadcasts during inquiries.
