President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to fast-track the completion of Hanimaadhoo International Airport, assuring residents that the facility will be fully operational by November. He made the remarks on Sunday during his visit to South Thiladhunmathi Atoll.

The President acknowledged delays in the project but said work is progressing to ensure readiness for international travel. He also announced new banking services at the airport, including a Bank of Maldives counter for foreign exchange, a US dollar ATM, and additional rufiyaa ATMs.

On housing, Dr. Muizzu confirmed that 500 housing units will be contracted to the Housing Development Corporation next month. He added that the housing project for families migrating from Hirimaradhoo will continue, while a court-suspended project will resume once approvals are secured.

Other planned developments include a 17-kilometre road project starting in 2026, a new school building, and a 30-bed hospital. The President also announced the start of construction tomorrow on a new police station, fitness and recreation centre, and the launch of dialysis services at the health centre by year-end.

Reiterating Hanimaadhoo’s importance, Dr. Muizzu said the island is central to the Government’s Sustainable Development Policy and national growth.
