MDP spokesperson Anas Abdul Sattar has accused the government of hypocrisy, noting that while it criticizes councils for wasteful spending, it continues to create unnecessary political positions.

The criticism comes following the appointment of former Minister Hamdhoon Hameed to a ministerial-level advisory role at the Ministry of Finance and Planning. In this role, Hamdhoon will advise Finance Minister Moosa Zameer on the implementation of the government’s 20-year National Development Plan.

Anas, who previously served as Minister of State for Finance during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, argued that the government itself engages in wasteful spending despite repeatedly targeting local councils over the issue.

Meanwhile, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said the government is considering abolishing atoll councils, citing concerns over wasteful expenditure.
