The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has strongly condemned Parliament Majority Leader and PNC MP Falah for calling for the execution of journalists, describing the remarks as a gross violation of fundamental human rights and press freedom.
In a statement issued Thursday, the MDP said the proposal for the death sentence and execution by impalement was a disturbingly cruel and inhumane suggestion that undermines freedom of expression and democratic principles.
The comments were made during the parliamentary debate on the proposed Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill, a ruling party-backed legislation that has drawn sharp criticism from journalists and the public.
The MDP expressed concern that such extreme remarks came from the Majority Leader of President Muizzu’s ruling party, saying it reflects an alarming disregard for democracy and human dignity. The party urged the government to uphold constitutional rights and commit to protecting press freedom in the Maldives.
