Kolige Mohamed Umar Manik (MU Manik), a pioneer of Maldives’ tourism industry, has passed away at the age of 78 while undergoing treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, in a post on X, said he received the news of MU Manik’s passing with deep sadness, describing him as instrumental in the development and growth of Maldives’ tourism sector. He said Manik’s contributions were worthy of praise and noted his role in establishing the Maldives as a world-class tourist destination.
Universal Enterprises, where MU Manik was a shareholder, said in a statement that he worked with courage and sincerity to promote the country’s tourism and won the respect and love of many, serving as a guide and mentor to others in the field.
MU Manik’s funeral will be held today after Asr prayers at Prasara Aman Mosque in Singapore.
