Independent media should be regulated through a self-regulatory mechanism rather than government control, MDP President Abdullah Shahid has said.
Commenting on the current "Media and Broadcasting Regulation" Bill in Parliament, Shahid described it as a “fraudulent bill” in a post on X.
He added that in a free democracy, media oversight should be handled internally by the media itself, not imposed by the government.
Shahid criticized the bill, introduced by MP Abdul Hannan, saying it is designed to control the free press and contains numerous errors beyond the scope of reform. Journalists have also called for the bill to be withdrawn.
