Former President Mohamed Nasheed has called for a meeting of all political parties to discuss the Media Regulation Bill, which has drawn criticism from journalists, the Maldives Media Council, and the Maldives Journalists Association.

Critics argue that the bill poses a threat to press freedom and could restrict the work of independent media in the country.

The bill was accepted and sent to the committee during an extraordinary parliamentary session. The committee on Sunday heard from representatives of the Maldives Media Council and the Broadcasting Commission.

Commenting on the issue, Nasheed stressed that while press freedom is vital, journalists must also be held accountable. He said a cross-party dialogue would be useful to address the concerns surrounding the bill.
