President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called upon the international community, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), to stand united in advocating justice, dignity, and peace for the people of Palestine. He made the remarks while speaking at the “SCO Plus” Meeting held on Monday in Tianjin, China.
The President said this year marks 60 years since the Maldives gained independence and joined the United Nations, reaffirming that the country remains as committed to peace, dialogue, and diplomacy today as it was in 1965.
Highlighting the Maldives’ deep concern over the ongoing suffering of Palestinians, President Dr Muizzu reiterated the nation’s unwavering support for their legitimate right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, based on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
He further emphasised that Israel’s inhumane actions against Palestinians amount to a blatant violation of international law and a grave infringement of human rights. On numerous occasions, President Dr Muizzu has strongly condemned the Israeli occupation government for its continued aggression.
At the meeting, the President also positioned the Maldives as a resilient and forward-looking nation, underlining its longstanding friendship with China, ambitious climate commitments, and the transformative “Maldives 2.0” digitalisation agenda. He further reiterated the Maldives’ support for President Xi Jinping’s Global Governance Initiative and called for greater inclusion of Small Island Developing States in international decision-making.
President Dr Muizzu is currently in China on an official visit at the invitation of President Xi Jinping to attend the SCO Summit, which serves as a key platform for dialogue among member states, partner countries, and international organisations to address challenges in security, economic integration, and global governance.
