Inner Maldives CEO Mohammed Firaq has suggested that reducing online tourist fares would be more effective than offering Free Independent Traveler (FIT) discounts to tourists.
His comments follow Maldivian Airlines’ decision to provide a 15 percent discount to tourists who book without tour operators. Firag argued that determining an FIT is complicated and may not work effectively under the current system.
He said lowering online fares would be more profitable, as such bookings require advance payments and would benefit travel agents, guesthouses, and tour guides working independently with Maldivian Airlines.
Speaking from his perspective as a Maldivian travel agent, Firaq noted that local agents have actively promoted the market but have seen little progress. He also dismissed allegations of fraud in the industry.
Firaq further called on Maldivian Airlines to introduce a 20 percent discount for customers booking directly online.
