Former MDP President and ex-Fisheries Minister Dr. Ibrahim Didi has announced that the Maldives Democratic Party will hold a nationwide protest on October 3 to challenge the government.

Speaking at an MDP gathering in Hulhumalé, Dr. Didi accused the government of undermining Parliament and the Supreme Court, and of using its supermajority to push through laws that restrict press freedom. He said the administration had curtailed freedom of expression and described it as increasingly oppressive.

Dr. Didi also criticised the government’s handling of the economy, citing rising commodity prices and the depreciating value of the dollar. He argued that despite passing annual budgets exceeding MVR 50 billion, no significant development projects had been carried out in key areas, including the promised 4,000 flats under the housing project.

According to Dr. Didi, the public can no longer remain passive and must take to the streets to hold the administration accountable. He called on all citizens to join the MDP’s protest on October 3.
