President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that, starting 1 January 2026, councils across all cities and islands will be charged domestic electricity rates for power used to light roads and public areas.

The decision applies to electricity supplied by both Fenaka Corporation and the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO).

The President made the announcement today on his official X account, stating that the measure aims to further strengthen the decentralised governance system. He noted that the change would allow councils to allocate more funds to other municipal services in their communities.

This development follows his earlier announcement on 5 September 2025 to double the budget allocation for Women’s Development Committees (WDCs) and to revise the fiscal policy governing block grants provided to councils.
