Some former Presidents of the Maldives
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has proposed reducing the allowances granted to former presidents and former members of parliament.

In a message shared with PNC MPs through a WhatsApp group today, the President said the move reflects the wishes of the people and that elected representatives should lead by example in reducing state expenditure.

However, the proposal was rejected by Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Thariq and Maafannu South MP Abdulla Rifau. Some members also suggested that allowances for former judges and retirees from the security services should be reviewed as part of broader cost-cutting measures.

The President’s remarks come as the government steps up efforts to curb expenditure and improve the Maldives’ financial situation.
