Inner Maldives Managing Director Mohamed Firaq has called on the government to reduce allowances paid not only to former presidents and MPs but also to former judges, military officials, and other ex-officials.
In a post on X, Firaq expressed support for President Muizzu’s consideration of reducing the allowances given to former leaders. “I am very happy when President Muizzu is considering reducing the allowances paid by the state, including those for the former President and MPs. I would also appreciate if similar consideration is given to former judges, military officials, and other ex-officials,” he said.
Firaq also highlighted the issue of double salaries, describing positions that allow officials to draw multiple payments as an additional burden on the state budget. He said reducing these payments would significantly relieve the government’s financial pressures.
“These expenditures are a huge amount of money from the state budget, so reducing such expenditures will be a great relief to the state,” Firaq said. “Such measures will strengthen state finances and enable the people to spend their money on more useful things.”
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu proposed reducing the allowances granted to former presidents and former members of parliament in a message shared with PNC MPs through WhatsApp. President Muizzu’s remarks comes as the government continues to implement measures aimed at reducing overall expenditures and improving the nation’s financial situation.
