Former President Mohamed Nasheed has voiced support for reducing the pensions and privileges provided to former presidents.
The government has announced plans to submit amendments to Parliament seeking to cut some of the benefits currently granted to former presidents and MPs. In a post on X, Nasheed said he also agrees that the pensions allocated to former presidents should be reduced.
According to the Former Presidents’ Allowances Act, those who serve one term as president receive a monthly allowance of MVR 50,000, while those who complete more than one term are entitled to MVR 75,000. In addition, MVR 50,000 is provided for living expenses and MVR 175,000 for office costs.
Under the Privileges and Powers of Parliament Act, MPs who complete one term receive an allowance of 30 percent of their salary (MVR 18,000 per month), while those serving two terms receive 45 percent (MVR 27,000 per month).
