MDP President Abdulla Shahid has pledged to repeal the Media Control Act, drawing parallels to the repealed Defamation Act.

Speaking at the MDP National Assembly session, the former Speaker of Parliament said the legislation was passed in violation of constitutional principles and parliamentary rules. He maintained that the government is attempting to restrict freedom of expression and warned that such measures undermine democracy.

Shahid noted that the bill was rushed through parliament in just one minute, describing it as an action that damaged the integrity of the legislature. He urged the government to withdraw the law and re-engage within the constitutional framework.

He stressed that the voices and thoughts of the people cannot be silenced and reiterated that the Act will eventually be repealed, as was the Defamation Act.
