The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has accused the government of dismissing employees who participated in the October 3 protest, calling it an act of political persecution and intimidation.

In a statement posted on social media, the MDP said several employees of government institutions have been terminated following their involvement in the protest. The party also reported that police confiscated the phones of two activists — Aishath Shiman Ahmed and National Assembly member Fathimath Zahiyya — for expressing their views online.

According to the MDP, six individuals, including former MPs and councillors, remain in custody after being arrested and remanded for 15 days in connection with the protest.

The party condemned the government’s actions as an attempt to silence dissent and control the public, saying such intimidation tactics reflect the administration’s “incompetence and desperation.”

“Threats and intimidation have never worked before and will not work now. The people will not be silenced,” the MDP said.
