Opposition MDP President Abdulla Shahid has strongly condemned the alleged leak of private content from an opposition activist’s phone while it was in police custody, describing it as state-sponsored intimidation.
In a post on X, Shahid accused the government of attempting to silence women through fear, stating that the Maldives is becoming a state that terrorizes women into silence.
He also urged the international community to condemn what he called a “grotesque abuse of power,” emphasizing that, as a member and Vice President of the UN Human Rights Council, the Maldives has an obligation to protect women’s rights and dignity, not weaponize abuse against young activists.
Shahid tagged several international organizations, including the UN Human Rights Office, UN Women, and the Commonwealth Secretariat, in his call for action.
