Former Attorney General Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed has expressed deep concern over President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s statement that the government has no official stance on the upcoming referendum regarding the restructuring of the Addu City Council.

Dhiyana noted that Addu City is the second most populous region in the Maldives and said it is alarming and disheartening that the government has chosen to remain neutral on such a significant issue.

She questioned whether the Maldives has been left to “float aimlessly” without a clear direction or vision from the government.

The referendum, scheduled for October 25, will allow residents of Hulhudhoo, Maradhoo, and Feydhoo to decide on the administrative composition of the Addu City Council. According to Elections Commission President Mohamed Zahid, over 9,000 people are eligible to vote.

Voters in Hulhudhoo and Maradhoo will be asked whether separate councils should be formed for their islands and whether the two areas should be managed under one council. Meanwhile, Feydhoo residents will also vote on whether they want a separate council for their island.

Although President Muizzu has said the government will not take a stance, several state ministers have reportedly been campaigning locally in support of separating Feydhoo from the Addu City Council.
