Former President Mohamed Nasheed has urged the people of Addu City not to let anger grow following the results of the referendum on forming separate island councils.
The referendum, held to decide whether Hulhudhoo, Meedhoo, and Feydhoo should separate from the Addu City Council, saw Feydhoo voting to remain while Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo voted in favour of separation.
In a post on X, Nasheed noted that 2,176 votes were cast in favour of forming separate councils and 2,251 votes to remain as a city. He said he hoped the outcome would not fuel division or resentment among the people.
According to the Elections Commission, 4,510 people voted in the polls, representing 47.1 percent of eligible voters, while 5,066 people—or 52.9 percent—did not participate.
