Former Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer has accused the government of distributing development projects to influence the upcoming local council elections.

Speaking at a press conference held by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Thursday, Ameer claimed that more than 200 projects had been awarded to private companies without a bidding process. He said 206 projects were granted under contractor finance using Bank of Maldives (BML) funds, and that the government had altered regulations to benefit selected individuals.

Ameer criticized the move as a violation of tender and procurement rules, calling it “an attempt to deceive the public” during the current administration’s two years in power.

He further alleged that although many projects were announced and handed over through state-owned companies, none had properly commenced. “So far, the only openings seen in these two years are projects initiated during the previous government,” he said.
