Meemu Sappe, founding member of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and former Member of Special Parliament for Meemu Atoll, has warned that the government’s economic policies could lead to a decline in the public economy.

In a message shared on social media, Sappe criticized President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration for accumulating large amounts of debt without justification. He urged the public to be vigilant about the potential economic hardships that may affect their daily lives.

Sappe’s warning comes amid growing concerns over the country’s economic situation. Former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom has also said the government may need to print money next year to cover recurrent expenditures. In contrast, former Tender Board Chairman Ismail Zareer noted that government debt has increased by 38 percent since the current administration took office.
