President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Ahmed Mahloof as the Ambassador of the Maldives to Japan. The appointment was made at a ceremony held at the President’s Office on Thursday.

Mahloof, a former MDP National Assembly Member and former Youth Minister, was approved by Parliament with a unanimous vote of 60 members. The post became vacant following the passing of former ambassador Hassan Sobir in July.

Mahloof left the MDP on September 8 this year and signed with the ruling PNC on November 14.

A long-time political figure, Mahloof has been affiliated with four political parties over the course of his career. He began his political journey with the DRP and was elected to the first Parliament under the current Constitution, representing the South Galolhu constituency. He later joined the PPM, formed in 2011, but was expelled following internal disagreements with former President Abdulla Yameen.

After the 2018 presidential election, Mahloof joined the MDP and served as Youth Minister in the previous government.
