As World leaders united to commit to global equitable access for COVID-19 vaccines, Canada has doubled its initial contribution to the COVAX facility with a $220 million pledge to help ensure vaccines reach everyone in low and lower-middle-income countries.

“Canada is committed to a robust global effort to stop COVID-19. That is why our government will provide an additional commitment of CAD 220M to the COVAX AMC for the procurement of doses for the 92 low and lower-middle-income economies. This is a doubling of our initial contribution. We urge all countries with the means to do so to support the COVAX Facility in any way they can,” said Karina Gould, Minister of International Development, Canada, and COVAX AMC Co-Chair.

Following the announcement, the Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Mr. David McKinnon has reassured that Sri Lanka and the Maldives are among the countries that will benefit from the $220 million that Canada committed to COVAX.

Canada’s commitment was made at the “One World Protected” - Gavi COVAX Advance Market Commitment (AMC) Summit held on Thursday. During the summit, $ 2.4 billion was secured to the Gavi COVAX Advance Market Commitment (AMC). The COVAX AMC mechanism will make COVID-19 vaccines available to lower-income countries. This funding will allow the COVAX AMC to secure 1.8 billion fully subsidized doses for delivery to lower-income countries and economies in 2021 and early 2022.
