Indian Home Minister Amit Shah has begun his first visit to the Jammu and Kashmir region since the abrogation of its autonomy in 2019.

This is the home minister's maiden visit to the Union Territory after India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party scrapped Articles 370 and 35A of the country’s constitution that granted special autonomous status to the Jammu and Kashmir region, a move which divided the state into two federally administered units.

Upon arrival, the minister presided over a high-level security meeting in Srinagar, Kashmir’s main city.

During his visit, Minister Shah will visit remote areas of the Kashmir Valley and the Jammu region and take stock of various development initiatives. Minister Shah will also chair a security review meeting in Srinagar and will also hold interactions with members of Jammu and Kashmir's Youth Clubs. In addition, Amit Shah will address a huge public rally on October 24, the first in the winter capital after the abrogation of Article 370.

Political experts in Kashmir believe the minister’s visit could inspire a reconsideration of New Delhi’s strategy towards the region.
