Hon Umar Zahir, 85, passed away in Malé on 20 December 2021 after suffering from Covid.

It was a very sad and black day in Maldives. The Maldives flag was lowered and flew at half mast for three days and the whole nation mourned in grief and great sorrow.

Hon Umar Zahir has served the Maldives in many different posts with a rare dedication, loyalty and courage as has never been seen in the recent past. One of his greatest contributions that must go into the annuls of our history in gold is how he nurtured and groomed generations of the best disciplined citizens of this country when he was Headmaster of Majeediyya School.

We cannot thank him enough in words for this great heroic service.

Holding many different ministerial posts, Hon Umar Zahir emulated the same example of selfless dedication and nationalism. Among them, yet another monumental task he so energetically accomplished was the making of an island near the capital Male’, by reclaiming the lagoon with waste and garbage. Thilafushi is a shining example of his great vision and perseverance.

His huge role in the reclamation and making of our dream twin capital Hulhumale is praiseworthy and will be remembered forever with gratitude and praise.

He held the portfolio of Minister of Home Affairs many times linked with different other portfolios.

He also held the posts of Minister of Sports, Minister of Construction and Public Works and Member of Citizens’ Majlis.

He undertook several development projects of Malé and the atolls. Very notable among them are Malé’s road development, Malé’s outer breakwater wall, Malé’s first waste disposal project, etc. His role in our independence struggle was fearless, painful and patriotic, and will be remembered with much praise.

Hon Umar Zahir is loved and respected by all, he was a friend of all, simple and humble, and yet most respectful. He is recognised and admired for having taken part in so many social functions and rituals, thus winning the hearts of a huge number of the common people and others.

Hon Umar Zahir’s passing away has created a big void in our country that will be difficult to replace. The biggest tribute we can pay him is to follow the remarkable discipline and values he has instilled in our society and generations of people.
